WEDNESDAYS

November 24th

4:30pm - work began on the ocean critters this evening. Each student had a choice of media to use and each of them is working away on their craftsmanship.

We also have our first artist of the week! Lucas showed great listening skills last week and worked really hard on the colours of his ocean.

Sketchbook Assignment - look for a sunset, they've been pretty amazing just lately - and use your colours to show me.

6:00pm - This evening we began work on an abstract watercolour piece, lots of instructions for successful watercolour mixing and application.

Sketchbook Assignment - Look at the work of Frank Stella and Kandinsky, draw your favourite of all!

7:30pm - The watercolour skills are improving! While painting this abstract piece I am sharing with the students new techniques and they are making some great discoveries.

November 17th

4:30pm Class Our ocean view artwork now has a painted ocean, students applied layers of watercolour crayon to create an interesting ocean colour. The water activated the colours and careful brushwork was required.

Sketchbook Assignment - A self portrait as a Pokemon (or other cartoon/animated) character

6:00pm Class - Monster circles are complete and I will be adding the finished work to Artsonia soon! A new project, which will be a non objective abstract painting.

Sketchbook Assignment - Look at the work of Frank Stella and Kandinsky, draw your favourite of all!

7:30pm Class - Uh oh, math conversations were incorporated into the class this evening! While using a compass there was discussion on the terms used to describe a circle 😆

The students are working on a watercolour skill builder, while creating an abstract artwork. There may be a little challenge thrown out there too 😉

November 10th

4:30pm Class Our new project is a view through a submarine window. Students were required to show space, by overlapping fish and by having some of their fish swim out of the frame. They also got to use a new to the studio art material - which they were very excited about.

Sketchbook Assignment - Snow is here and the students are to draw something you wouldn't normally build from snow - and then looking at the snow outside, add colour to their drawing.

6:00pm Class - using watercolour paints, focusing on paint application and showing the transparent qualities of the paint. This will be finished next week.

Sketchbook Assignment - Houses, theirs from the front and back and a neighbour across the street.

7:30pm Class

Value drawings are complete and students are excited to move onto a new project. We will be working on watercolour skill building next week, which will include paint brushing skills.

November 3rd

4:30pm Class New Project - in a circle! Tonight was all preparation and next week the students will be drawing.

Sketchbook Assignment - they have a list of 6 or 7 different fish to look up and draw, plus a few more of their own choosing. They can look in books or Google search the images and will be using these for their project next week.

6:00pm Class - using watercolour paints, focusing on paint application and showing the transparent qualities of the paint. This will be finished next week.

Sketchbook Assignment - A gigantic burger - with any kind of twist! Maybe a candy burger ora desert burger and instead of cheese melting custard. Time to get creative!

7:30pm Class

Value drawings are beginning to complete and students are excited to move onto a new project.

Sketchbook Assignment - Photo reference search is happening. They should find three completely different photo, there should be strong values in each. Students should bring photos on an iPad to use in the studio and if this is not available to them, send the photos to me and I can put them on a device.

October 13th

4:30pm Class

Pumpkins! One of my favourite ways to paint is with a double or triple dipped paintbrush, as the colour mixing magic happens on the painting surface. Last night there were lots of orange hues to be found.

Sketchbook Assignment - draw 4 things that are orange, but not things that are typically orange. I suggested they use colour media like pencils or markers.

6:00pm Class This evening the monster wheel painting began.

Sketchbook Assignment - collect drawings of at least five houses. They can be from the neighbourhood, from visits to family and friends or just a house they see and love - and if they're like me and don't leave the house there's always a Google image search 😀

6:00pm Class So beautiful. Last night students discovered they had been using watercolour pencils and applied water to their drawings! They were all in awe of the magic that happened.

Blind contour drawings of each other:

7:30pm Class

All students are now working on adding values to their drawings. They are training their brains to see these values in their reference photos, which can be quite tricky.

Sketchbook Assignment - they are working on a practice of using the scumble technique in a #2 value. Pencil pressure is key and this is the first time most students in this group have conciously thought about the pressure they use on a drawing - good practice!

Weekly Updates

4:30pm Class - Our line drawings are almost complete. Students have been learning about line and shape and pattern and putting it all together in an artwork. There was so much focus in the class this evening! Students then used oil pastel to create more patterns before painting with liquid watercolour. Everyone listened intently to "Karens painting instructions" how to look after the brush, pick up the paint and apply it to the surface. Next week the tape comes off the first completed project.

Sketchbook Assignment - Collect three leaves and bring them to class next week

6:00pm Class - Continuous line drawings are really popular with this group of students! Before starting the drawings, these students had a warm up with two hand drawings in an attempt to engage the right side of the brain. It's super fun and maybe they will share with you.

The first continuous line drawing was made with Sharpie, which most new students are horrified by - but this group took it in their stride, no problem. We will continue more line drawings next week.

Sketchbook Assignment - Two continuous line drawings of something that lives and moves, to define further - has legs! My suggestions were a parent and a pet but it could anyone or thing.

7:30pm Class - Our landscape adventure has begun. Everyone had a chance to warm up and engage their right brain before beginning the sketches of landscapes. Everyone discovered that these exercises are actually easier when not looking at the paper!

Preliminary sketches have been made, which has also prompted some adjustments. Everyone is now working on adding value to the sketches.

Sketchbook Assignment - something different for each student:

Bella - is working on the texture of her clouds and is thinking about how she is going to apply the pencil to her drawing.

Emery - has a new photo to work from, and is working on adding values and thinking about line direction for the rocks.

Jessica - is working on her drawing and watching for proportion. When adding her darkest values which are between the branches of the trees, she is going to add only these dark shapes, not the trees. It's a challenge I have set for her.

Nevaeh - will make a new sketch and look at placing the horizon line and mountain line first. Then she is going to work on the boardwalk, and also think about how to render the textures.
